Trocaire College Launches Technology Institute, New Programs in Cybersecurity and Data Analytics

BUFFALO, NEW YORK – March 12, 2019 – Trocaire College has added two new, high-tech programs to its slate of academic program offerings: Cybersecurity and Data Analytics. Both will be offered starting in the Fall 2019 semester within the newly established Trocaire College Technology Institute (TCTI).

“Trocaire is in a position to not only expand high-tech academic offerings in Western New York, but to deliver these opportunities with our distinctive focus on hands-on learning within a small and supportive setting,” said Trocaire President Dr. Bassam M. Deeb. “We are poised to make an impact by providing our graduates with more paths to quality jobs in emerging fields.”

Cutting-edge Programs for a Growing Market

An “Innovation Incubator” made up of internal stakeholders and outside consultants developed the new programs in line with market needs. Both Cybersecurity and Data Analytics will be offered as Associate of Applied Science degrees, and there will also be two Certificate programs available: Applied Analytics and Fundamentals of Data Analytics.

The employment needs in tech-related fields are projected to increase across the board through 2026, sometimes much faster than average. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the growth rate is 12% for computer and information technology; 28% for information security; and 15-19% for data science.

“These well-paying positions are currently going unfilled because of a lack of qualified workers, and we hope to fill that gap with Trocaire-educated tech graduates,” Deeb said.

Students enrolled in TCTI will experience traditional classroom learning but also use emerging technologies and innovative, hands-on labs to prepare them for the complex requirements of the jobs they will be attaining.

TCTI will be housed at the college’s Extension site, located at 6681 Transit Road, Williamsville.

The site will undergo a renovation in the coming months to  convert several existing classrooms and offices into a coordinated, technology-oriented space, which will include a computer networking lab, data visualization lab, several computer classrooms, dedicated servers, computing hardware and software and both faculty and student “sandboxes” for shared creative work.

A $1.68 million construction project, TCTI was funded in part by the New York State Higher Education Capital Matching Grant program. The grant will fund $420,000; Trocaire will fund the rest of the project. A variety of naming opportunities exist for donors interested in investing in the project.

The build-out will occupy approximately 7,230 square feet of space. Trautman Associates, Architects and Engineers will coordinate construction under the supervision of architect James M. Radwan, AIA.

In addition to the new programs in Cybersecurity and Data Analytics, the TCTI will house a suite of technology certifications through the college’s Workforce Development arm as well as Trocaire’s existing tech-focused academic programs, including Healthcare Informatics, Health Information Technology and Computer Network Administration.
